Objective
This example demonstrates the design capabilities of wood shear walls in LAVA, focusing on force transfer around openings.
Shear Force Transfer Around Opening (ASD) [Ref 1]
Assumption: 10’ high x 12’ long shear wall, with 4’ high x 6’ long opening located within, measured 2.5’ from left, and 4’ from bottom. Apply 3000 lbs seismic force (unfactored) at top of shear wall.

Comparison
The following table shows the design results. The LAVA program yields results within an acceptable range with the reference [Ref 1].
LAVA | [Ref 1] | Difference | |
|---|---|---|---|
Required Sheathing Capacity | 350.7 plf | 350 plf | 0.2% |
Required Strap Force | 1021 lbs | 1021 lbs | 0% |
Required HD Force | 1750 lbs | 1750 lbs | 0% |
