Shear Wall Details

The Shear Wall Details section provides a comprehensive visual breakdown of your lateral force-resisting elements, making it easy to verify design assumptions and understand load paths at a glance. This view highlights the specific locations and calculations used in each segment of the wall, including:

  • Post sizes and reactions

  • Top and bottom plates

  • Headers

  • Wall height and segment lengths

  • Calculated deflections and drift values

Each detail below shows the assumptions of the LAVA model and displayed to match the actual geometry and framing layout. Whether you're reviewing design output or preparing submittals, these annotated images give you and your team the confidence that every piece of the wall is designed to code—with clarity, accuracy, and speed.

The Shear wall lever arm is measured by the offset to the edge of the wall.    There is a Anchor Offset and a Post offset and these two offsets are added together to calculate the total offset from the edge of each side of the wall.

Offsets

Tie-Downs allow you to assign an Anchor Offset and Post Offset on each end of the wall.  

Anchor Offset

This is measured from the outside edge of the last chord/post to the center of the anchor.

Post Offset

The post offset is measured from the edge of the wall to the center of mass of the posts.  In symmetric layout, you can find the center easily by finding the width of the total studs + the gap and divide by two.

LAVA can support asymmetrical post layouts by entering a Post Offset by calculating the center of mass for the studs.
