Objective
This example demonstrates the design capabilities of wood beams in LAVA.
Sawn Beam Design Using ASD [Ref 1, Page 272]
Simple span of 13.5 feet. Members spaced at 16” on center. Uniform dead load DL=18.67 lb/ft, and uniform roof live load LLr=26.67 lb/ft. Moisture MC<19%, normal temperature conditions apply. Material is DFL- No.1. Plywood sheathing prevents lateral buckling.
Model Information
Model Name: Sawn Beam.x1 Refer to Beam: BM.RF0.1
Comparison
The following table shows the design results. The program gives reasonably close results with the reference [Ref 1].
LAVA | [Ref 1] | Difference | |
|---|---|---|---|
fb | 1630 psi | 1640 psi | 0.6% |
Fb’ | 1868 psi | 1870 psi | 0.1% |
fv | 55 psi | 55.6 psi | 1.1% |
Fv’ | 225 psi | 225 psi | 0% |
Deflection (DL+LLr) | 0.958” | 0.96” | 0.2% |
